Design styles: A focus on Art Deco

Updated: Jul 17, 2023

Art Deco is an interior design trend that has remained popular since it's inception in the 1920's. This style, by definition, evokes a sense of timeless glamour by incorporating bold patterns, luxurious finished and sophisticated silhouettes.

Key features of Art Deco include:

Geometric patterns

Sunbursts, chevrons and stepped forms are key elements of an art deco design. These patterns add dynamism and a sense of movement.

Luxurious materials

Marble, brass, chrome, exotic woods are all examples of the rich materials used in Art Deco design.

Bold Colours

Art Deco embraces a rich colour palette. Think of jewel tones, such as emerald, ruby and sapphire as black and gold.

Statement lighting

Lighting fixtures are a focal point of Art Deco design, often featuring intricate geometric patterns and metallic finishes. Chandeliers and wall lights add that touch of glamour, especially when placed in front of a large mirror or etched glass panel, further reflecting the light.

So how can I add a touch of Art Deco glamour to my home?

Whether you are looking for a maximalist Art Deco overhauls or simply adding a few key elements to give a nod to this iconic design movement, here are some ideas:

Mix & match

Don't be afraid of mixing old and new in one room. Add a statement to your room in the form of an Art Deco inspired chest of drawers, large mirror, or ceiling light. These items will blend with a contemporary room design, adding a modern twist on the design style.

Accent walls

Use bold geometric wallpaper or stencils to add drama to your walls. Go all out of pick a specific area to make a statement of. this will allow you to infuse Art Deco elements without overwhelming the entire room.

Soft furnishings

Introduce luxurious velvets in bold jewel tones, either in upholstery, curtains or a few scatter cushions. Mix with luxurious neutrals such as cream, black and gold in your hardware to really finish off the look.
